Childhood Drowning Rates

Indian River County

Children in Indian River County suffer unintentional drownings at rates above Florida’s already first-in nation rate.

But that’s not the entire story.

For every child under age 18 who dies from drowning, the CDC estimates that another seven receive emergency department care for nonfatal drowning.

40% of drownings treated in emergency departments require hospitalization or transfer for further care (compared with 10% for all unintentional injuries).

Nonfatal drowning injuries can cause brain damage and other serious outcomes, including long-term disability.
